Some Iranians believe that sound of Santur is like a sky full of stars. Shining of crystals in the darkness of a desert night. Santur is played in different cultures all over the world: China, Turkey, Greece and Switzerland.
Farshad Sanati started to play Santur 20 years and after 8 years of playing this instrument in traditional style, he found that traditional aspects of Iranian music does not satisfy his curiousaty and critical mind. So, he started to learn techniques of contemporary Santur playing from maestro Ardavan Kamkar, who has promoted this style, for five years. Characteristics of this style includes independence of each hand during playing, polyiphonic pieces, irregular tunings and using chords (right hand plays chords and left hand plays melody), which is not customary in Persian music. Farshad Sanati and Fardin Abbasi (Daf and Tombak player) founded Road Ensemble six months ago and during this period they have had several concerts in Finland, such as Jyväskylä summer festival, Middle East jam festival and Faces festival.
Farshad is now a master degree student in Music, Mind and Techlogoy progaram at University of Jyväskylä.
